Professor Hashim Hussin bin Yaacob, Allahyarham

It is with the deepest sorrow and great sadness that I wish to announce that a friend of the old school, Professor Hashim @ Hussin bin Yaacob, a 60-year-old former Sociology Lecturer at the Universiti Sains Malysia, passed away at 4:40am this morning at the Cardiothorasic Intensive Care Unit of The National Heart Institute, Kuala Lumpur, due to complications after a successful triple bypass surgery.
His remains was later brought for prayers to the Surau of Taman Segambut SPPK, his sister’s residence, and immediately then after sent home to Kg. Dangar, Jalan Pasir Mas-Rantau Panjang, Pasir Mas, Kelantan.
May his soul rest in peace. From Allah we all came, unto Allah we shall return.

Yes, he was the first Malay in Binghamton. He did his post-graduate at SUNY-B in 1972, after getting his first degree at SUNY Stony Brook. He was among the first Malay Malaysian Government Scholars to go to the United States in 1968.
He co-founded PEMAU (FOMSANA) and BIMA, and practically wrote both associations’ entire Constitutions.

One can never know a man well enough. Nor should one, I suppose. But I’ll share with you one thing. He was never one about personal wealth. With his intellect and connection, he could have amassed a fortune; although many had used him to become filthy rich.
During his doctoral candidacy, he had a study room at his rented house filled with books and other reading materials: from wall to wall, and even covered the entire carpet on the floor. He told me then that when he died, he would leave nothing behind except his books. That was some 28 years ago.
True to his words, he didn’t leave much to his name, except for a house in Penang (which the family wondered whether he owned or rented) that was filled with books.

Sdr Mazlan,
Saya ucapkan terima kasih di atas segala jasa bakti dan nilai persahabatan sejati yang sdr tunjukkan sewaktu arwah masih hidup dan telah pergi. Pemergian beliau merupakan suatu kehilangan dunia akademik dan intelektual Malaysia. Saya mengenali beliau sebagai sahabat karib sejak tahun 1970an dahulu sewaktu di AS dan di USM. Saya sempat berbicara dengan beliau pada kali terakhir beberapa hari sebelum beliau tidak sedarkan diri di ICU, IJN. Beliau memohon maaf kepada rakan-rakan yang tak sempat beliau temui. Sebelumnya pada 27 Disember saya berjumpa beliau di Kota Bharu, dan berbicara tentang kecelaruan politik Malaysia.
Apa yang dapat saya rakamkan ialah, “We fought a good fight in those days, either in the US as student movement front runners and in USM as academic activists. No regrets.”
Semuga roh sahabatku berada di kalangan mereka yang dicucuri rahmat Allah. Al fatihah.

Kehadiran arwah dalam hidup saya ditakdirkan ketika saya masih remaja yang tidak tahu apa-apa, diterjahkan ke dunia barat yang begitu asing secara tiba-tiba, tanpa saya duga. Tunjuk ajar dan pedoman beliau banyak membantu falsafah hidup saya sehingga kini, walaupun kami berlainan haluan dan ideologi, dan sudah sekian lama tidak berjumpa, kerana perjalanan hidup yang berbeza. Kami bertemu semula selepas 21 tahun pada tahun 2004.
Saya sudah kehilangan bapa, bapa mentua, dan beberapa orang rakan yang rapat. Namun pemergian beliau memberi kesan yang lebih mendalam bagi saya.
Lawatan saya ke IJN sebelum dan selepas pembedahan beliau amat mengharukan bagi diri saya, tak dapat saya rungkai dengan kata-kata.
No regrets? Of course. We may change a few small things here and there, if given the chance, but we basically did what we wanted to do, and what we thought were right.
Berikut ialah pesanan ringkas yang saya terima daripada beliau yang mungkin juga beliau hantar kepada rakan-rakan yang lain beberapa hari sebelum pembedahan beliau, untuk tatapan semua:
Tiada kata yg dpt ku lafazkn tiada budi yg dpt ku balas. Sungguhpun ke peritan hidup sdh lama sy tanggung namun sy tak mengerti kata kalah. Namun setelah brhadapan dgn nyawa d hujung pisau bedah sy terpaksa memoh on silaturrahim dari sahabat dan rakan taulan. Sy mohon ampun n maaf d atas kepincangan hidup n menganggu ketenteraman sdr. Usaha murni sdr akn memperkuat tekad sy utk terus brkhidmat kpd agama bangsa n tanah air. ALLAH saja yg dpt membalas budi n jasa sdr. Amin. Tq.

Sebelum ke Kuala Lumpur saya ada membuat pertanyaan mengenainya kepada Tuan Syed Halim Jamalullail (Ayahku) yang tinggal di Kg. Dangar. Ayahku kenal dengan Professor Hashim tetapi saya tak dapat relate dengan Prof tu.
Allahyarham telah dikebumikan di kubur Lemal dimana ahli keluarga beliau di kebumikan. InsyaAllah saya akan menemani saudara untuk menziarahi kubur beliau dan Ayahku sanggup untuk bersama. Sila hubungi saya apabila tiba dibumi Kelantan.

I should have guessed, as his biodata listed him as an active member of UMNO Cawangan Kg. Lemal, which is actually next to Kg. Dangar.
As for my next visit to Kelantan, I don’t have a date, yet, but the plan is soon.
And when it happened, it shall be a busy date, as always whenever I visited Kelantan.
And, of course, when the trip is on, you’ll be among the first to know.

Al-Fatihah untuk Allahyarham..
Terharu bila terjumpa tulisan Gurindam Jiwa mengenai ‘AyahLong’ saya di sini. Dan sebak bila baca sms 11 Jan 2009 daripada beliau. Itulah pak sedara saya yang tersayang. Beliau adalah ibarat seperti bapa saya. Kali terakhir saya bercakap dengan beliau melalui telefon ialah pada akhir December selepas beliau baru dapat berita mengenai sakit jantung yang dialami. Iaitu selepas 2 bulan saya di sini. Saya sangat terkilan kerana tiada di sisi Allahyarham semasa beliau sakit dan pergi menghadap Allah S.W.T.
Terima kasih.. terima kasih banyak-banyak kerana sudi mengabadikan kisah Allahyarham di sini. Terima kasih juga atas gambar2 beliau yang diletak di sini..saya sangat menghargainya.. ini sahaja yang saya ada buat pengubat rindu.. Hashim picked my bag from Broome County airport in 1981 to my house on Riverside Drive, Binghamton. Just because of this, he leaved a long impression to me of what kind of person he was. The bag was lost while travelling from Subang to JFK Airport.
Sop, during those Binghamton days–and for me the rest of my US days–helping friends was so much fun. We’d do it for nothing. Yes, we were young, brash, immature, and a lot more. But the friendship that was developed then, meant so much more to me now, especially when I compare it to friendships that I develop here. May be because adolescent was such a period that anything that happened will stick with you for the rest of your life.
I finally got in touch with that guy who did his PhD in Nuclear Physics at MIT from late 70s to early 80s–that was once “interviewed” by NASA–and informed him about our Professor.
W R Yusoff is now teaching at MMU Cyberjaya.

Wa’alaikumussalaam Puan Haliza,
Saya berkesempatan menghadiri tahlil arwah di Surau Taman Segambut SPPK Sabtu malam yang lalu, 21 Feb, walaupun kelewatan kerana hujan lebat.
Saya tidak gemar berjalan malam, apatah lagi di dalam cuaca yang tidak sesuai; tetapi perasaan terkilan kerana tidak dapat menghadiri upacara sembahyang jenazah tempoh hari memaksa saya memandu kereta malam itu.
Saya berpeluang bertanyakan tentang Puan kepada Puan Kasimah dan En. Hamid malam itu.
Di malam itu saya diperkenalkan kepada seorang sahabat arwah yang membuka akaun di CIMB itu. Setelah memperkenalkan diri saya, beliau secara berseloroh bertanya, “So he didn’t try to convert you?” Begitulah reputasi arwah di zaman mudanya.
Saya juga berterima kasih kepadanya kerana membantu arwah semasa di IJN.
Di akhir majlis, tibalah masa untuk berpisah. Terasalah sedikit hiba. Kerana walaupun malam itu kita berkumpul untuk mendoakan seorang sahabat yang telah pergi; keseluruhan episod ini telah memberi peluang kepada kita untuk menjalin sebuah persahabatan yang baru. Sebelum ini saya tidak pernah kenal seorang pun saudara mara arwah.
Puan Kasimah sempat berpesan, “Kalau ada apa-apa pun berita, panjang-panjangkanlah ke mari.”
Ya, silaturrahim harus dipanjangkan. Dan dikekalkan. Semasa hayat masih dikandung badan. Janganlah bila ada kematian baru hendak berpesan-pesan. Takut nanti tidak kesampaian.

Kerana walaupun malam itu kita berkumpul untuk mendoakan seorang sahabat yang telah pergi; keseluruhan episod ini telah memberi peluang kepada kita untuk menjalin sebuah persahabatan yang baru. Sebelum ini saya tidak pernah kenal seorang pun saudara mara arwah.
Puan Kasimah sempat berpesan, “Kalau ada apa-apa pun berita, panjang-panjangkanlah ke mari.”
Ya, silaturrahim harus dipanjangkan. Dan dikekalkan. Semasa hayat masih dikandung badan. Janganlah bila ada kematian baru hendak berpesan-pesan. Takut nanti tidak kesampaian.

Untitle
These poems, particularly, "apolitical intellectuals" and "the development set" reminded me of our student movement days (1960s & 1970s) where these poems were repeatedly recited and printed to get the message across in our fight for the liberation of the third world. Justice, democracy, human rights, and equality are still not within our reach today. The fight will have to go on. Venceremos!

Excuse me, friends, I must catch my jet
I'm off to join the Development Set;
My bags are packed, and I've had all my shots
I have traveller's checks and pills for the trots!
The Development Set is bright and noble
Our thoughts are deep and our vision global;
Although we move with the better classes
Our thoughts are always with the masses.
In Sheraton Hotels in scattered nations
We damn multi-national corporations;
injustice seems easy to protest
In such seething hotbeds of social rest.
We discuss malnutrition over steaks
And plan hunger talks during coffee breaks.
Whether Asian floods or African drought,
We face each issue with open mouth.
We bring in consultants whose circumlocution
Raises difficulties for every solution --
Thus guaranteeing continued good eating
By showing the need for another meeting.
The language of the Development Set
Stretches the English alphabet;
We use swell words like "epigenetic"
"Micro", "macro" and "logarithmetic"
It pleasures us to be esoteric --
It's so intellectually atmospheric!
And although establishments may be unmoved,
Our vocabularies are much improved.
When the talk gets deep and you're feeling numb,
You can keep your shame to a minimum:
To show that you too are intelligent
Smugly ask, "Is it really development?"
Or say, "That's fine in practice, but don't you see:
It doesn't work out in theory!"
A few may find this incomprehensible,
But most will admire you as deep and sensible.
Development set homes are extremely chic,
Full of carvings, curios, and draped with batik.
Eye-level photographs subtly assure
That your host is at home with the great and the poor.
Enough of these verses - on with the mission!
Our task is as broad as the human condition!
Just pray god the biblical promise is true:

Article I
Every person has the right to education and participation in intellectual activity.
Article 2

CHAPTER 11
OBLIGATIONS OF THE STATE
Article 13
The State is obliged to take prompt and appropriate measures in respect of any infringement by State officials of the rights and freedoms of the intellectual community brought to its attention.
Article 14
The State shall not deploy any military, paramilitary, security, intelligence, or any like forces within the premises and grounds of institutions of education.
Provided that such deployment is necessary in the interest of protecting life and property in which case the following conditions shall be satisfied:
(a) There is clear, present and imminent danger to life and property; and
(b) The head of the institution concerned has extended a written invitation to that effect; and
(c) Such invitation has been approved by an elected standing committee of the academic community set up in that behalf.

* The symposium condemned violations of the autonomy of academic institutions through closures, invasion by security, police or military forces, censorship of intellectual work, restrictions on freedom of association, movement, speech and publishing.
* The symposium demanded the immediate and unconditional release of all intellectuals and their families illegally or extra-judicially detained or imprisoned, the return of those exiled, and an end to all harassment, intimidation and persecution of intellectuals, on the basis of their work.
* The symposium called upon all States to adequately resource academic and intellectual endeavours because without this there can be no academic freedom.
THE INTELLIGENTSIA AND INTELLECTUAL FREEDOM
* The symposium called for the creation of a Pan African Organisation to monitor, document and disseminate information on abuses of academic and intellectual freedom and repression, harassment, intimidation and detention of intellectuals.
* The symposium called for the strengthening and democratisation of existing networks and associations of the African intellectual community through the increased representation of marginalised groups such as women, young and unestablished scholars.
* The symposium called for the transformation of administrative structures, procedures and practices in academic institutions to make these more representative of and accountable to teachers, researchers, students and others working within them.
* The symposium called for the promotion of participatory and democratic methods of teaching, research and publishing, and high professional and ethical standards.
* The symposium called upon African academic institutions to promote intellectual exchanges among African scholars, provide sanctuary to exiled scholars, and to offer all African academics equal terms of service, remuneration and treatment regardless of nationality.
* The symposium called upon African intellectuals to develop solidarity and supportive networks to defend the collective interests of the intellectual community.

Re: Protest Against Detention of YM Raja Petra Kamaruddin under the ISA and Demand for his Release Immediately
As peace loving citizens of Malaysia we are extremely concerned about the health and well being Raja Petra Kamaruddin who was detained under the ISA on 12 September 2008..
We are writing to urge the authorities to immediately meet with the detainee, stop the semi-solitary confinement of this detainee and all other forms of inhumane treatment of the detainee.
We urge you to guarantee that Raja Petra Kamaruddin will not be subjected to physical or psychological torture or other ill-treatment while he is in custody;
We call for him to be allowed immediate, private and regular access to lawyers, their families and independent medical attention.
We urge the authorities to charge him with a recognizably criminal offence and bring him before a court of law, or else release him immediately.
We would like to express concern that the ISA violates fundamental human rights, as set out in the Universal Declaration of Human rights, including the right not to be subjected to torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment (Article 5); the right to not be subject to arbitrary arrest or detention (Article 9); the right to a fair and public trial (Article 10); and the right to be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to law (Article 11). In the case of Raja Petra and numerous other previous ISA prisoners, there is also no doubt that the ISA is also being used to deny the freedom of opinion and expression (Article 19) and freedom of peaceful assembly and association (Article 20).
Therefore we urge you to repeal the ISA.

Kami ingin menyuarakan keprihatinan kami di sini bahawa ISA melanggar hak asasi manusia seperti yang telah dicatatkan dalam Perisytiharan Hak Asasi Manusia, termasuklah hak untuk tidak disiksa atau sebarang tindakan yang zalim dan merendahkan martabat manusia (Artikel 5); hak untuk tidak dikenakan penahanan atau penangkapan secara sewenang-wenangnya (Artikel 9); hak untuk mendapat peribicaraan yang adil dimahkamah terbuka (Artikel 10); dan hak untuk dianggap sebagai tidak bersalah sehingga dibuktikan bersalah menurut undang-undang (Artikel 11). Dalam kes Raja Petra dan tahanan-tahanan ISA sebelumnya, tidak syak lagi bahawa ISA juga digunakan untuk menafikan kebebasan bersuara dan berfikir (Artikel 19) dan juga kebebasan berpersatuan dan berkumpul secara aman (Artikel 20).
Justeru itu kami mendesak YAB Dato’ Seri untuk memansuhkan ISA.
